So long and short, immediately update your OS to Ubuntu 18.04, 64bit. Cross platform FreeCAD runs on Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems. FreeCAD itself is almost unrecognisable due to its staggering development over that time. Designed for your needs FreeCAD is designed to fit a wide range of uses including product design, mechanical engineering and architecture, whether you are a hobbyist, programmer, experienced CAD user, student or teacher. ![]() The problem is that even at original release date, most ubuntu Libs are already getting a bit old and yours is now 5 years beyond that! The development of most software over that period would be extensive. Even 16.04 can not run FreeCAD 0.18 truly properly since some of its libs are too old, so it does work but with compromises. It is a really bad idea to still use an OS which is "end of life" hence has no more security patches, particularly don't use it on the Internet.ĭo not upgrade to only 16.04, 18.04 is the most recent Ubuntu LTS release, in most cases its best to follow the latest Ubuntu LTS version every 2 years, although many of us skip every second LTS release hence update every 4 years. Without a doubt you should upgrade, doing so is free. ![]() You don't, in practice, although in theory if you updated enough libs you could possibly get to a point where you could compile yourself but in doing so you would most likely kill everything else on your system.
